Goodbye to a River (1959) by John Graves (RIP 1920-2013) is a classic story of the fading historical life of Texas in the 20th century. Graves takes a solo canoe trip down the Brazos River before a planned dam was to be built changing the flow of the river. His only companion was his loyal and spunky dachshund. The story is part childhood memory, part Texas history, part environmental exhortation and part simple beauty as Graves interacts with the living river and landscapes. This is too beautiful of a book to miss if you have any Texas nostalgia.
