If I Could Only Fly (1979) by Blaze Foley (RIP 1949-1989). Foley lived deeply and died young. He was beloved by almost everyone who knew him it seems. This song was also recorded by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson for their album, Seashores of Old Mexico (1987). So most folks will know the song from them. But I still like's Blaze's original version of the song with the sound of his age old voice. There are two documentaries about his remarkable musical life. Blaze Foley: Duct Tape Messiah (2011) by Kevin Triplett and Blaze (2018) by Ethan Hawke, both very worthy of viewing. None other than Lucinda Williams wrote a tribute song for Blaze; Drunken Angel that appeared on her album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (1998). How many of us have wished we could somehow fly, especially as a means to go away somewhere, maybe to be with loved ones or just escape to a place of peace. If I could only fly. If I could only fly.
